My 5 second rule to scripting shortform

The first five seconds of a video decide everything.

That short window determines whether someone keeps watching or scrolls away forever. No algorithm tweak or fancy edit can make up for a weak start. Viewers don’t owe you their attention. You have to earn it instantly by showing why your content is worth their time.

So what does “value to the viewer” actually mean?

It’s the clear, immediate signal that tells someone:
“This is for me.”

That value can take different forms:

  • Entertainment: a surprising visual, strong personality, or humor.
  • Education: a fact, insight, or “I never knew that” moment.
  • Empathy: showing you understand their problem or experience.
  • Utility: something they can use or apply right now.

The best creators often combine more than one. Think of a TikTok that starts with an unbelievable NYC fact, or a YouTube ad that opens with a relatable frustration before showing the solution. Both instantly answer the viewer’s hidden question: “Why should I care?”

The Formula

In simple terms:
Hook = Value + Context + Curiosity

At the highest level, creative strategists will blend their goal into a preexisting cultural context/moment/trend. This prompts people to anticipate an outcome. Sometimes you deliver beyond their expectations. Sometimes you don’t. Genius-level creative is finding the optimal moment to dance between the two.

A strong opening line or image delivers value (the payoff), sets context (what we’re looking at), and leaves just enough curiosity to pull the viewer through the next moment.

When I write short form scripts for clients or my own projects, I test every opening by asking:

“Would a stranger who knows nothing about this topic understand why they should stay?”

If the answer is no, I rewrite until the value is obvious.

The Takeaway

Whether you’re scripting a TikTok or a brand story, remember: the viewer’s attention is a trade.
They give you five seconds, and you give them a reason to keep watching.
